Dr. Mark Holterman is a surgeon, educator, and researcher, but, his philanthropic efforts may outshine the latter. Specifically, he is making an immense impact on the quality of children’s healthcare through his work with IPSAC-VN (International Pediatric Specialists Alliance for the Children of Vietnam). Dr. Holterman, his Vietnamese-born wife, and the chief surgeon of the largest children’s hospital in Ho Chi Minh City founded IPSAC-VN due to limited access to quality children’s hospitals in Vietnam (ReporterExpert). IPSAC-VN works with Vietnam hospitals and medical schools to update and improve their surgical practices.
His path to medicine wasn’t due to his upbringing, but, to his excellent grades. He studied biology at Yale and then medicine at the University of Virginia. His desire was to become a pediatrician, but, meeting his future wife at school changed his direction.
Dr. Holterman’s wife, Ai-Xuan Le, influenced him to choose surgery in addition to pediatrics. He also influenced her to specialize in pediatric surgery. The two married in 1988 and have three sons.
Dr. Mark Holterman fulfills even more roles than the ones already mentioned. Currently, he is the CEO of Mariam Global Health which invests in innovative medical companies (https://www.zwivel.com/doctor/mark-holterman). Mariam Global Health came out of a merger of the ideas of gifted scientists and the capital of social investors. Mark is also a full professor at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and his work includes researching cancer, diabetes and stem cell treatments. He has also been a supporter of the emerging field of regenerative medicine. He received the American Diabetes Association coveted Innovative Research Award. In addition, he is a pediatric surgeon on staff at Children’s Hospital of Illinois, St. Francis Medical Center and Advocate Christ Children’s Hospital. Mark co-founded The Hannah Sunshine Foundation which addresses rare chronic pediatric illnesses. He also has published numerous articles and lectured worldwide.
Dr. Mark Holterman has been practicing medicine more than 20 years and has two offices in Illinois. He has made himself available in Illinois and to the world by taking on so many crucial roles in medicine and society. He truly goes above and beyond the call of duty in medicine.
